 "Bordeaux 2005, 10 Ans Après":

Dom de Chevalier 2005 Pessac-Léognan

17,5 , Very dark crimson. Broad spread of aromas – really rather like Petrus in that respect (though not in build). Classic, non-showy palate that has a notable charge of tannins. Very clean and bracing but with a most impressive nose.

Drink 2018-2040

17,5, Robe pourpre  très foncée. Un large éventail d’arômes – un peu comme Pétrus à cet égard (mais pas en ce qui concerne la structure). Classique, élégant en bouche, et assez tannique. Un vin très net, vif et doté d’un bouquet impressionnant. 2018-2040

What is a great Bordeaux?
A great Bordeaux is one that naturally has everything, but nothing in excess. Everything is in equilibrium: elegance, fruit, power and complexity. All of this also needs to be supplemented by a unique soul derived from a magnificent terroir that permits, by its magical expression, any wine lover to begin dreaming as they drink. All people can do is aid this process of equalisation in an attempt to bestow a wine with the signs of greatness – or indeed hide the signs of poor parentage.

The greatest you’ve tasted?
I’m lucky to have had the chance to try many great wines in my life, but one I remember in particular. It was a magnum of Pétrus 1947 brought by Heinz Schmidt in May 2008 to Domaine de Chevalier. I tried it alongside a magnum of Cheval Blanc 1947, but the Pomerol possessed an extra brilliance. It was fresher, denser, more complete, silkier, more voluptuous and very, very long on the palate. Without a doubt it was a historic bottle. I still dream about it.

Pessac-Léognan

Rich, powerful and savory wines, from the hints of smoke and bacon in Haut-Bailly to the rich licorice and blackberry of Smith Haut Lafitte. The appellation stands out for its opulence and depth; Haut-Brion, and its renowned sister La Mission Haut-Brion, though many levels above in terms of price, hardly eclipse the likes of Domaine de Chevalier.

Top choice: Domaine de Chevalier, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Rich creamy nose, real sense of depth and richness, blackberry compote, truffle, licorice. Instant austerity, though, on the palate, leading gradually to fine damson, violet perfume and fresh acidity. Delicate deceptively fine length with gripping, juicy tannins.

The Domaine de Chevalier 2005 has a powerful and quite burly bouquet with sumptous black fruit laced with truffle, cedar and a touch of juniper berry. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. This is an effortless Graves, beautifully proportioned with the oak seamlessly integrated. It builds in the mouth and fans out wonderfully with a kiss of black pepper on the structured, masculine finish. Clearly, this is one of Olivier Bernard's finest achievements under his reign.

The best 100 Bordeaux I tasted in 2014 underline one simple rule: The 2011 vintage is a year to buy white wine from Bordeaux.

Sure, some outstanding reds were made – particularly those from top vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, Pomerol and Saint-Emilion – but it was the dry and sweet whites of the region that were of phenomenal quality.

Score 99

A white that is dense and structured with amazing honey and dried-fruit character. Mango, pineapple and papaya. Chalky undertones from the soil. Full and chewy with a beautiful depth of fruit and intensity. So much going on here. Phenomenal depth of fruit. Why drink grand cru Burgundy? Better in 2017.

Country France Region Bordeaux Vintage 2011 Date January 28th, 2014

I did think twice about naming my 2014 Bordeaux Wine of the Year the stunning Sauternes from Château Guiraud, considering I scored the Château La Mission Haut-Brion a perfect 100 points. Yet the Guiraud costs under US $100 while still offering amazing richness and complexity. It is the greatest wine ever made at Guiraud and is a monument to the great wine region of Sauternes.
