Intense raspberry and boysenberry fruit drives along, flecked with anise hints and scored with roasted apple wood details. A touch toothy on the finish, with a loamy note, but the fruit takes an encore, which is a great sign for the future.—J.M.

Le meilleur jamais fait. Couleur sombre, intense et pourpre. Nez aromatique, subtil et complece, avec pour la première fois une dimension plus crémeuse. Subtil et complexe. En bouche, c’est le Domaine de Chevalier à la texture la plus raffinée que je connaisse. Il fond au palais et après le milieu le vin se mêle à la salive complexe et profond dans une grande finale séveuse et noble. Beaucoup de précision et de charme. Bravo !
The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot picked between 4-21 October at 45 hectoliters per hectare, and matured in 35% new oak. Oh yes! This is a perfumed bouquet that unfolds beautifully in the glass with blackberry, cedar, smoke and a light marine influence, not unlike Japanese nori. The palate is medium-bodied with such fine tannins that it bought to mind Burgundy rather than Bordeaux. There is a grainy texture here, quite saline in the mouth with an entrancing sense of symmetry, very classic but not austere on the finish, with a long and saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Domaine de Chevalier from the busiest man in Bordeaux, Oliver Bernard. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Rating 94-96

Dard purple red with violet hue and black core. Elegant nose with aromatic character, fine fruit, blackcurrants, elderberries and hints of blackberries, mild spices, vanilla, discreet toasting aroma, quite complex. On the palate, sweet fruit, firm but ripe tannins, aromatic spiciness and hints of dark chocolate, convincing length. 95

This has all the signature welcome and power of the very best vintages of Domaine de Chevalier, one of the 'clue' châteaux you should follow to track the quality of reds and whites in Bordeaux in any given vintage. Here you see that 2016 hits it out of the park with the reds. Rich damson, deep black cherry, slate, wet stones and curls of cold ash - this has beautiful complexity and texture. Stunning.

93-96 The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a wine of total precision and class. Today, the flavors are remarkably primary, while the tannins, unusually, are totally buried by the fruit. It will be many years before the 2016 is ready to show all of its cards, but it is a brilliant wine in the making. Dark red cherry, blood orange, mint, white pepper and rose petal infuse the strikingly delineated, vibrant finish.

Domaine de Chevalier 2016 red: Although Olivier Bernard and his team now have a hand in a number of increasingly successful Pessac-Léognan estates, this is the 'original' Bernard wine. The assemblage in 2016 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked October 13th to the 21st, 30% Merlot, picked October 4th to the 12th, and 5% Petit Verdot, picked October 10th to the 12th. The yield was 48 hl/ha, and the alcohol is declared as 13.5%. A very impressive nose, fresh and very aromatic, filled with readily expressed violets and ripe sweet plums, wonderfully pure, fresh and bright, with a creamed fruit intensity. The palate shows a very polished, creamed plum character, the sweet fruit mixed with notes of black bean, olive and violets, underpinned by a wonderful bed of ripe tannins, unobtrusive but wrapped tenderly around the fruit, and a delicate acid lift. A delicious, charming style in this barrel sample, with super potential. The wine of Domaine de Chevalier has shown brilliantly at the primeurs in several recent vintages, and in 2016 it seems that this trend has been continued. 17.5-18.5/20 • 95-97/100

La robe est sombre avec un nez fumé et les belles notes de cèdre habituelles. Le vin est dense, élégant avec beaucoup de fraîcheur, l’ensemble est d’une belle persistance. Il ne possède pas tout à fait la densité du 2015, mais sa fraîcheur fait merveille avec une belle finale épanouie, il est plus long et possède plus de classe. Il a été élaboré avec 65 % de cabernet-sauvignon, 30 % de merlot et 5 % de petit-verdot.

Couleur pâle, aux reflets dorés. Nez intense, fin, subtil et floral. Bouche délicatement moelleuse d’un bout à l’autre de la dégustation. Cette année le vin est plus marqué par une note de fruits exotiques (mangue) plutôt que de sauvignon blanc. L’ensemble est délicieux, caresse et s’achève incrachable. Le boire jeune. Assemblage : 70 % sauvignon, 30 % sémillon.

This is clearly one of the more impressive whites on display here. They have teased out a sense of verticality, and you can feel the walls and scrape the flesh of the citrus. If it wasn't for the heights that we know Domaine de Chevalier can ascend to, you would be sighing over the structure of this wine. White peach and rich pear are seasoned with beautiful spicing, but it just lacks the grip and drama of the best vintages.

95–97. Barrel Sample. Rich and smooth, this is an impressively structured and concentrated wine. It has pleasant freshness and a crisp lemon flavor, but that is just a small part of this intensely ripe wine. It should last for many years.

Domaine de Chevalier Blanc 2016: From about 5 hectares of vines, which are 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, Olivier Bernard and his team have fashioned an imposing wine in this vintage. The Sauvignon Blanc was picked from September 10th to the 25th, and is 75% of the blend, while the Semillon was picked September 15th to the 30th, and accounts for the other 25%. The yield was 45 hl/ha. This has a surprisingly grainy character to the nose, with a citrus fruit freshness and tension behind. The palate is substantial, broad, rather cool, with white peach, orange zest, lychee and honeysuckle nuances, but wrapped in a very fine, tense, acid frame, along with a serious depth of grip. An imposing, serious, very reserved style, battened down a little by oak at the moment, but impressive, fresh and pure. Great grip in the finish, savoury, dry, biting, and very long. 16.5-17.5/20 • 93-95/100

Domaine de Chevalier blanc 2016 Le plus bourguignon des Pessacs ! charmeur au nez, c’est une peau de pêche, un bouquet de fleurs blanches. C’est sans compter sur la bouche, qui monte en puissance au fur et à mesure de son ouverture : entre le charme entre le charme exotique et la précision saline, on goûte le citron confit, les fleurs de tilleul, on se laisse envahir. La rétro longue et puissance n’en finit pas, impressionnant. 18,5/20
